I strive to marry the visual elements of whimsical narrative illustrations with underlying darker conceptual elements. Illustrations that contain stylized characters are often associated with childlike wonder. Therefore, characters such as these are almost always labeled as artwork designed for young viewers. Lil Birb’s Emporium challenges this stereotype by combining whimsical characters reminiscent of children’s book illustrations with narratives that portray discomfort, utilizing symbols based on alchemy that also reflect on issues of mental health.
