Description
Background: The American Optometric Association (AOA) assembled the Optometric
Clinical Practice Guidelines, stating recommendations for eyecare professionals and the diabetic eye examination. The purpose of this research was to evaluate how well practicing optometrists were following these AOA guidelines. Methods: An eighteen item electronic survey was created and distributed through five counties [Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Washtenaw, Monroe] in southeastern Michigan. Results: Out of the 187 electronic surveys distributed, 58 optometrists responded. Information was obtained regarding patient history, exam elements performed, dilation schedules, and referral guidelines for their diabetic patients. Conclusions: After evaluating the results, it was concluded that the majority of optometrists in southeastern Michigan do follow the AOA guidelines, and in some ways practice at a level above the AOA recommendations. |
