Assessment Of Gross Motor Child Development Using The Denver II Developmental Screening Test.

Background: This research study investigates the Denver Developmental Screening Test, 2d edition (DDST-II), Gross Motor section to determine if it is an accurate measure of milestones children should accomplish within their first six years of life. There has not
been many studies done on the DDST-II, and I would like to try to determine its
applicability and usefulness. Methods: The DDST-II testing procedures and timeline were used on a child born May 251
h, 2005 to determine if development of gross motor skills were achieved in a timely manner. The child was tested and observed in monthly increments, starting at the first month of life and documentation of his progression of skills was made throughout an 8-month period. Results: For the 8-month period, 11 skills were achieved with great accuracy. Only 1 of the 11 skills tested was not reached at the specified time frame given by the DDST-II timeline. That skill was achieved though, within 2 weeks of when it was supposed to. Conclusion: Throughout an 8 month period, the DDST-II Gross Motor section was found to be a very effective and accurate tool in assessing the timing of development in a normal child.
