Eye Care In Michigan's Long-Term Care Facilities.

According to the American Optometric Association, less than 20% of the 20 million people over the age 65 have received adequate care for vision problems which are present in about 100% of this population. The average age of nursing home resident is about 75 years. A survey of Michigan's registered nursing homes and homes for the aged was conducted to determine the existence and the adequacy of vision care to the residents. The impact of optometry to help meet the needs of these long-term facility residents was also evaluated. The responses indicated that a high percentage of long-term care facilities do not have policies for vision care and do not have their residents periodically screened for vision problems. Opportunities for optometry in Michigan to remedy this situation are available but further studies are necessary to assess optometry's impact.
