Description
Cocaine dependence is a chronic condition that even today, lacks solid treatment options. One drug that has been tested for this indication is disulfiram. Disulfiram (Antabuse) is currently approved for the treatment of chronic alcoholism. Disulfiram's effect in alcoholism is due to the inhibition of aldehyde dehydrogenase, an enzyme involved in ethanol metabolism. The current theory if that disulfiram effects dopamine metabolism, but is also thought to decrease concurrent alcohol and cocaine usage. Research has shown that disulfiram may have a place in the treatment of cocaine dependence, but has yet to show consistent, repeatable results.
