Having a wide variety of mouthwashes to choose from at the grocery store can often leave us wondering which one is the best to buy. Most people want the mouthwash with the best antiseptic effect. In order to determine the efficacy of common mouthwashes, I conducted an experiment that viewed reduction in the microbial load on bacterial culture plates. Scope, Act, Listerine Ultraclean, Listerine Total Care, Listerine Cool Mint, Colgate, Crest and Meijer Antiseptic were tested. The alcohol containing mouthwash Listerine Total Care showed the greatest reduction in bacterial load and proved to be the most effective.
