Description
The purpose of this paper shall be to probe the many aspects of corticosteroid therapy, with special Attention to ocular steroid therapy. Some of the general concepts of the adrenocortical system will be presented, as well as various corticosteroid preparations
and routes of administration. The mechanism of ocular inflammation will be discussed, along with the systemic and ocular pharmacological actions of steroids. Also, a number of indications for corticosteroid therapy as well as contraindications will be presented . A large amount of this paper, however, will necessarily be devoted to
the adverse effects of steroid therapy, both systemically and ocularly. Finally, some conclusions will be made regarding the safe use of the corticosteroids.
