Description
In ophthalmic eyewear, whether it be prescription or plano (for sport and safety purposes), impact resistance is critical to the safety of an individual's ocular health. The FDA has recognized the importance of impact resistance and established standards which must be adhered to in the manufacturing of an ophthalmic lens. The following is a discussion regarding impact resistance which consists of two sections. The first section describes the FDA policy and subsequent testing, including methods of testing, factors affecting impact resistance, and the mechanisms of lens fracture. The second section is a study comparing the impact resistance of different samples of lenses.
