“Beyond Tolerance: Lessons from the Jim Crow Museum

Dr. David Pilgrim is the founder and curator of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University.  Dr. Pilgrim has been interviewed by The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio, Fox television, and the British Broadcasting Corporation.  He produced the documentary, Jim Crow’s Museum, which won the Flint Film Festival’s Best Documentary Film Award and a Golden Cassette Award for Public Service.  Dr. Pilgrim has lectured at many institutions, including Smith College, the University of North Carolina, Stanford University, and Middlebury College.  He is the creator of the Jim Crow Museum’s traveling exhibition, “Hateful Things.”  He is creating a second traveling exhibition which will examine the stereotyping and mistreatment of Jews, women, Asians, poor whites, Mexicans, Arabs, and others.  Dr. Pilgrim is the co-creator and manager of the Jim Crow Museum’s web site (www.ferris.edu/jimcrow).  His short stories and essays about race relations have appeared in Callaloo, Shooting Star Review, Reader’s Break, and Obsidian II.  In 2003-2004, he was selected as Ferris State University Distinguished Teacher.
